Population surveys and community outreach for Siamese Crocodile conservation in East Kalimantan
Project aims
Estimate the Siamese Crocodile population at three localities using a combination of drones, eDNA and spotlighting
Identify the current attitudes and perceptions of local communities towards crocodile conservation
Engage with local schools and raise awareness on Siamese Crocodile schools
Results
68 km of rivers and swamps were surveyed at three localities, producing confirmed records in one locality and provisional records in one other
A reproductively active population was recorded in the Mesangat wetland system
45 interviews with fisherfolk were completed, producing an improved understanding of local attitudes towards crocodile conservation
