Population surveys and community outreach for Siamese Crocodile conservation in East Kalimantan

Project aims

  • Estimate the Siamese Crocodile population at three localities using a combination of drones, eDNA and spotlighting

  • Identify the current attitudes and perceptions of local communities towards crocodile conservation

  • Engage with local schools and raise awareness on Siamese Crocodile schools

Results

  • 68 km of rivers and swamps were surveyed at three localities, producing confirmed records in one locality and provisional records in one other

  • A reproductively active population was recorded in the Mesangat wetland system

  • 45 interviews with fisherfolk were completed, producing an improved understanding of local attitudes towards crocodile conservation
