Project aims

  • Identify Talaud Cuscus distribution using a combination of surveys and community interviews

  • Protect priority areas through community conservation areas and village-issued hunting regulations

  • Initiate regular monitoring of cuscus status in community conservation areas

Results

Forested areas thought important for Talaud Cuscus conservation were identified and mapped based on a combination of surveys and direct observations, interviews and community meetings.
5 of the 13 villages whose lands overlap with cuscus habitat agreed not to hunt the cuscus or to clear its habitat.

Bi-annual monitoring detected potential cuscus hunting signs near the 8 villages that have not yet been engaged with, indicating the importance of expanding to these remaining villages as soon as possible.
