The emergency

Gigante Wrinkled Ground Frog or Gigantes Forest Frog was formerly found across the Gigante islands in the Philippines. There is very little known about the species's ecology and it does not occur in any protected area. Its only known locality is threatened by habitat loss and disturbance. There was an urgent need to improve understanding of its distribution and ecology, and to establish in situ and ex situ conservation actions for the species.

Results

Project Palaka was established to provide conservation interventions for the frog. Initial activities included field surveys were completed on Gigantes Sur, threat assessments, and the collection of 21 individuals for the establishment of an ex situ breeding programme.
