Project aims

A potentially important population of Malaysian Giant Turtles persists in an area of lowland wetlands on Belitung Island. The wetland is being managed by the community group Tebat Rasau. There is a need to identify what needs to be done to support their work, and to integrate turtle conservation into it.

Results

Several ASAP Partners comprising WRC Jogja, Satucita, Indonesian Herpetofauna Foundation, and Genbinesia collaborated to provide pratical training to the Tebat Rasau community group on turtle identification and the basics of turtle handling and microchipping. Additionally the roles and responsibilities of each organisation were openly discussed, and the long-term support that Tebat Rasau requires was identified.
