Establishing a robust evidence-base to inform conservation planning for giant rats across Biak-Supiori.

Project aims

  • Gather data on the distribution and ecology of the Biak Giant Rat and Emma’s Giant Rat, using combined social-science and ecological survey approaches.

  • Identify the extent to which local communities hunt giant rats in communities across Biak-Supiori, both inside and outside protected areas

  • Collect associated data on the dynamics of this hunting pressure (drivers, patterns, specificity, scale), to provide a baseline against which to evaluate the potential impact of hunting on surviving giant rat populations
