Conserving the Southern River Terrapin through community participation and stakeholder engagement

Project aims

Conservation project objectives:

  • Finalise, publish and launch a Terrapin Conservation Strategy that serves as a national action plan for the conservation of the species

  • Protect and secure at least 1,000 terrapin eggs for incubation every year for the next three years

  • Release at least 600 healthy headstarted hatchlings into the river every year for 3 years

  • Remove at least 20% of detectable abandoned / ghost nets in the river per year for 3 years

  • Elucidate the population size and distribution of the river terrapins in what is believed the last stronghold for the species through aerial and in-water surveys, long-term tagging and genetic analyses.

Organisational objectives:

  • Enrol the Research and Conservation Officer in a hands-on conservation training

  • Enrol the Community Engagement Officer in a course that is relevant to her responsibilities, e.g. a communications or marketing course

  • Develop a 3-year strategic plan and annual budget with the help of a facilitator/trainer

  • With an external communications consultant develop a communications strategy.
