Project aims

The project covered two species:

  • Determine the distribution and population status of the catfish Clarias batu and the Tioman Island Loach by surveying the potential inland water bodies on Tioman Island

Results

  • The original project focused only on the catfish. Surveys on Tioman Island. The species was recorded in multiple streams on the island.

  • The survey was extended to the mainland and the species was recorded for the first time in the Endau basin.

  • Based on these survey results it is unlikely that the species still qualifies as Critically Endangered.

  • In response to this positive finding, the project objectives switched to surveying and understanding the conservation status of the Tioman Island Loach.
