Project aims

Establish a healthy and genetically viable assurance colony of the Malaysian Giant Turtle from 47 turtles of unknown provenance

Results

  • In partnership with Gembira Loka Zoo an assurance breeding programme was established at the zoo

  • Following a thorough health and physical assessment, 13 turtles were selected as founders for the breeding programme

  • The facilities at Gembira Loka Zoo were modified for this species, including off-exhibit breeding ponds

  • Breeding was successful in 2023 with 8 out of 9 eggs successfully hatched.
