Protection of the peatswamp fish Betta burdigala on Bangka Island, Indonesia

The emergency

Betta burdigala is a small-bodied freshwater fish species endemic to Bangka Island, Indonesia. Previous research has indicated that the species is known from only four localities, only one of which is likely to have any viability. The threats facing this unprotected locality are severe and the interventions required will take time to materialise.

There is an urgent need to establish an ex situ programme to prevent this species going extinct, whilst other activities, such as community engagement and stronger habitat protection are implemented.
