ASAP Species That We Work On

What We Do

Our team has a long history working in Cambodia and a proven track record in biodiversity monitoring and research and community engagement. Our Cambodia Program Director, Tuy Sereivathana (Vathana), received the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2010 for his work mitigating human-elephant conflict in the region, where he developed innovative low-cost solutions to help farmers protect their fields from elephants while improving farming practices and livelihoods.

Recently, our work has focused on enhancing protection of at-risk Asian elephant populations in two priority areas in Cambodia – Prey Lang Forest and the Cardamom Mountains – by monitoring, habitat protection through improved forest use, and human-elephant conflict mitigation. By virtue of protecting this keystone, umbrella species, we are contributing to the protection of all species sharing the same habitat, including the critically endangered Sunda pangolin in the Cardamoms, where we have a launched a new program to improve monitoring and protection of this imperiled and highly trafficked species. An important component of this work includes community engagement, particularly in schools, to raise awareness on pangolin status, illegal trade, and its conservation importance.

Our herpetologist, Neang Thy, is also documenting new occurrences and at least one new species – most recently a gecko – of endemic reptiles and amphibians that have yet to receive a Red List assessment.
