About

The BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) is a leading community-based, non-profit, environment and development-focused non-government organization committed to maintaining ecological balance and harmony between humans and nature. BEDS was established to solve complex environmental and social problems in Bangladesh together with local people through respecting local knowledge and culture.

Our Mission

The Mission is to build the capacity of the most vulnerable communities to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources, provide eco-friendly means of living, reduce the adverse effects of climate change, and improve their socio-economic condition while maintaining ecological balance.

The Solution

Rural reconstruction and ecosystem restoration will be the key solutions for the overall development and conservation of the terminal coastal community and nature. Ecosystem restoration and rural reconstruction can be achieved by planting and regeneration of mangroves in collaboration with local people, raising awareness and participation of vulnerable communities in terms of biodiversity, coastal protection, promotion of mangrove-based alternative livelihoods, entrepreneurship development, clean solar energy equipment’s and services and climate change adaptation and mitigation. Addressing the aforementioned issues for social and environmental development would be ensured by establishing multi-stakeholder international collaborations and pertinent finances.

Our Impact

A local initiative in terms of climate change adaptation and mitigation to protect coastal people from natural disasters will be a core impact of BEDS activities. This work will bring alternative and climate-adaptive sustainable livelihood options for the villagers and will increase mangrove coverage as well as biodiversity, and a certain amount of carbon will be sequestered. Sustainable livelihood is the key to making a community less vulnerable to disasters and climate change and improves social health, the environment, equity, rights and gender development. Women's participation in social activities and overall family income will increase as a result of these efforts, as will the next generation's awareness of their social and environmental responsibilities.

About Us

Wildlife conservation and protection is one of the major thematic area of BEDS. Wildlife conservation is a very important issue in respect of maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. Sundarbans is the single largest mangrove forest world having huge biodiversity in which there are endangered and critically endangered species. Climate change, peoples’ unconsciousness and lack of conservation knowledge are the reason why wildlife is in threat. Some greedy people also engage themselves in wildlife hunting activities. These are the reasons why BEDS has been conducting activities on wildlife conservation and protection. From the begging of our journey we have been conducting outreach education program and public awareness for ASAP Species conservation. Previously BEDS also supported information and species collection for Northern River Terrapin captive breeding activity and vulture conservation activity of IUCN Bangladesh
