Zoologische Gesellschaft für Arten und Populationsschutz e. V. (ZGAP)
Mission statement
The primary goal of the Zoologische Gesellschaft für Arten- und Populationsschutz (ZGAP) is the conservation of ‘forgotten’, but highly endangered species and subspecies and their habitats.
ZGAP was founded by a small group of dedicated conservationists, spearheaded by Roland Wirth in Munich in 1982.
ZGAP helps place a spotlight on many threatened yet neglected species. For instance before, few had ever heard of the Philippine Spotted Deer, nor was it red-listed at that time. When ZGAP took first interest in the species in 1984, it was at the edge of extinction – it still is threatened now, but at least survives thanks to various conservation activities (including captive breeding) initiated since then.

Earlier this year, a significant breakthrough was made in one of the projects funded by ASAP’s Species Conservation Fund. After a long search, the dedicated team rediscovered the very first specimen of an Mesilau Stream Toad, thought to have been lost to science.
