Location Information

This species is endemic to Lake Kurumoi, which lies in the middle of the narrow isthmus connecting the Birds Head Peninsula with the remainder of New Guinea in Indonesia. The lake is situated in hilly terrain at an elevation of about 400 m (Kadarusman et al. 2010, G.R. Allen pers. comm. 2019).

Geographic Range

Possibly Extinct

Population Information

It was previously common in the lake (G.R. Allen pers. comm. 2019) but in 2007/2008 it was found only in the lake margins (Kadarusman pers. comm. 2019).

The main threat to this species comes from severe habitat alteration in Lake Kurumoi, including changes in vegetation and sediment levels, and a drop in the water level, caused by an infestation of introduced tilapia.
